Choosing a size for a big American wall

The sizes that look right in a British flat look small in an Arizona living room, so size up. Above a sofa or a bed, 24x36 is the usual answer and 18x24 the smallest that doesn't disappear; a single print should be about two thirds the width of what it hangs over. For a feature wall, 30x40 or A1 unframed, or two 18x24s side by side in matching frames.

Shape first, then size: 18x24 and 24x32 are 3:4, the shape of a phone photo; 24x36 and 20x30 are 2:3, the shape of a camera photo; 16x20 and 11x14 are 4:5, the shape of a portrait straight off most phones. Pick the size in the right shape and the crop tool fits the image without cutting anything you wanted.

Frames go up to 24x36, which is the largest most people want to hang, and arrive glazed with the hardware. Above that, print unframed and have it framed locally, or hang it from a rail.
