Printing a photo of the northern lights

Aurora photos are mostly dark sky with a band of colour, and the two things that spoil them in print are noise in the dark and a sky that goes blotchy. Night mode on a recent phone handles the first; using the original file rather than a copy that's been through a messaging app handles the second, because compression hits dark gradients hardest.

Matte is the finish: it keeps the sky smooth and the blacks deep, and the colour reads as it did outside rather than as a screen. Resist the urge to boost the green before uploading; what's in the preview is what prints, and aurora prints that look right are the restrained ones. A2 or A1 in landscape, Black frame.

If there's a foreground, the beach, a house, a figure, keep it in the crop. A band of light on its own looks like a screensaver; the same light over Balmedie looks like a night you were there.
