When someone dies, one of the small jobs is a photo for the front of the room, the easel at the service, or the table at the wake. What to know, briefly

  • A3 or 11x14 framed for an easel or a table; A2 or 16x20 for a larger room. Both lean as well as hang.
  • An old printed photo can be photographed flat in daylight or scanned, and prints well at A4 or A3. A phone photo prints well at any size up to A2.
  • Matte suits a portrait, and framed prints are matte. Black or Oak frames are the usual choice; the preview shows both.
  • Order the print unframed if the date is very close; it leaves the same day. Framed takes one to three working days to make first.

How long it takes

Prints are normally dispatched the same day in the UK, the US and Australia, and within a couple of days in the EU and Canada; framed prints take one to three working days to make first. Delivery is tracked and included. If the service is within a few days, order unframed and frame it locally, or write to hey@printshrimp.com with the date and we'll tell you honestly what's possible. Black, White or Oak pine, 20–25mm deep, glazed with shatter-resistant plexiglass, hanging kit in the box. Printed matte so there's no glare behind the glass. Most sizes up to A1.

Black frame

A smooth black finish. Pine, 20–25mm deep, with 1–2mm shatter-resistant plexiglass.

Oak frame

A natural oak finish. Corner-protected in transit and delivered with the hanging kit in the box.

Your questions

The only photo I have is old and small. Will it print?

Usually, at A4 or A3. Photograph the print flat by a window with no reflection, or scan it, and upload; the preview shows you how it will look. Softness in an old photo reads as age rather than a fault.

Can it be delivered to the funeral director?

Yes. Their address and the name of the deceased or the family at checkout, your details as the buyer; the tracking comes to you.

Can I order copies for the family?

Yes. Several prints to one address in one order, three or more unframed at 20% off; or separate orders to separate addresses, each with a message in the box if you'd like.

Can I add their name and dates?

Yes, by adding the text to the image first in Canva or your phone's editor, then uploading that. A white border with the name beneath the photo is the usual layout.

Choosing and preparing the photo

The photo people respond to is the one where the person looks like themselves, not the formal one. A phone photo from a lunch, cropped to the face and shoulders, prints well at A3 and is often better than a studio portrait from decades ago. If the best photo has other people in it, the crop tool lets you choose just the part you want.

For an old print, lay it flat by a window in daylight and photograph it straight down with the flash off, or use a scanner; either prints at A4 or A3. Black-and-white and faded colour both suit matte paper and a Black or Oak frame.

If you'd like the name and dates on it, add them in Canva or your phone's editor beneath the photo on a white border, keep the text simple, and upload the finished image. Check the preview once, and order; if time is short, unframed leaves today.
