WHAT TO KNOW

What to know about printing a scan

  • Photograph the scan flat, in daylight by a window, with no reflection on it; a scanner is better still. If the clinic gave you a digital file, use that.
  • Scans are small, grainy images by nature, so keep the print small: A5, A4, 5x7 or 8x10. The grain is part of it; bigger than A4 and it stops looking like a scan.
  • Crop to the image and leave the hospital's text in or out as you like; the crop tool shows you. Matte suits it, and framed prints are matte.
  • A white border in the file before uploading gives the mounted look without a mount, and suits a scan particularly.

Your questions

Will a photo of the scan print clearly?

At A4 and below, yes, as long as the photo was taken flat in daylight without a reflection. The preview shows you before you pay.

Can I send one to each set of grandparents?

Yes, one order per address, each with its own message in the box. Put their address at checkout and yours as the buyer; the parcel shows no price.

Which frame suits a scan?

White for a nursery, Oak for a living room, Black if the scan is cropped tight to the dark background. The preview shows all three.

Can I add the name or the date?

Yes, by adding it to the image first, in Canva or your phone's editor, and uploading that. We print the file as it comes.

Photographing a scan so it prints well

The scan print is glossy thermal paper, so the enemy is reflection. Lay it flat on a plain surface by a window in daylight, stand so your shadow isn't on it, and shoot straight down with the flash off. Tilt it slightly if you can see the window in it. Fill the frame but keep the edges parallel, and let the phone focus on the image, not the paper's edge.

Crop to the scan image itself, or to the whole print with the hospital's text, whichever you want to keep. Upload, pick A4 or 8x10, and the preview shows it in the frame; if the grain looks heavy, drop a size, which is what a scan wants anyway.

For a gift, write the message in the basket; it's printed on a slip and goes in the box with the frame, and the receipt and tracking come to you.
