Want to turn your artwork into something people can buy? If you’re exploring how to sell prints online, one of your first decisions is whether to offer physical art prints, digital downloads or both.
The difference is simple: a digital buyer receives a file and arranges any printing themselves. A physical-print buyer receives the actual artwork, with the option of choosing a framed piece that arrives ready to hang.
You don’t need a printer or a room full of stock to choose the physical route. With PrintShrimp, you create the designs, list your products and market your shop. We print, frame, pack and ship orders straight to your customers. And if you’re starting from scratch, our free Skool community has courses, videos and guidance to help you learn to sell posters.
Physical prints vs digital downloads: what are you selling?
Both formats can turn the same creative idea into a product. What changes is the experience you offer and who takes responsibility for producing the finished wall art.
| Question | Physical art prints | Digital downloads |
|---|---|---|
| What does the buyer receive? | A printed product delivered to their address. | A digital artwork file. |
| Who arranges printing? | We handle production when you fulfil through PrintShrimp. | The buyer arranges printing if they want a physical copy. |
| Can you offer a finished framed product? | Yes. Our framed prints arrive assembled and ready to hang. | The buyer needs to arrange any printing and framing separately. |
| What does the seller manage? | Artwork, listings, marketing, customer relationships and checking orders before production. | Artwork files, listings, marketing, usage terms and customer questions about the files. |
| Do you need physical stock? | No. We make each order on demand. | No physical stock is needed. |
Neither format automatically sells better. Choose according to the buyer you want to serve, the product you want to offer and the work you want to manage.
Sell physical prints when your buyer wants the finished artwork
Imagine someone choosing an illustration for their bedroom. They like the design, but they don’t want to find somewhere to print it, choose paper or work out which frame fits.
A physical listing gives them a more complete purchase: select the artwork, choose the size and wait for delivery. A framed option takes that further by removing the need to buy and assemble a frame.
That convenience gives you something concrete to sell beyond the design itself. Your listing can explain the paper, dimensions, finish and framing so buyers understand exactly what is coming.
Offer different ways to buy the same design
With PrintShrimp, your physical wall-art range can include:
- Premium posters and art prints: archival-grade paper, 200gsm minimum and 260gsm in most locations, with matte, satin or gloss finishes for unframed prints.
- Ready-to-hang framed prints: Black, Oak or White pine frames with shatter-resistant plexiglass, the artwork already inserted and a hanging kit included. Framed prints use a matte finish.
- Fine Art prints: 300gsm, 100% cotton rag paper with a soft watercolour texture and a non-reflective surface, available for the UK, USA, Canada and EU.
You don’t need to launch every option immediately. Start with the format that suits your artwork and audience. A graphic poster collection might begin with Premium prints; a collection of painting reproductions might suit our Fine Art paper.
Adding framed prints gives buyers a finished-product choice without creating framing work for you.
Sell digital downloads when the file is the product your buyer wants
A digital download suits a buyer who wants to receive the artwork file and decide how to use or print it within your stated terms. They might already have a preferred printing service or want to organise the finished piece themselves.
Your responsibility is to make that purchase clear. Explain which files are included, their proportions, the sizes they are intended for and what the buyer is permitted to do with them.
No physical fulfilment doesn’t mean no customer service. Buyers may still need help understanding file formats, choosing the right file or knowing what to ask a printing service for.
If you would rather sell a defined physical product than help customers organise their own printing, poster print on demand is worth considering. You specify the available products, and we make what they order.
Print on demand removes the stock problem—not your creative control
For a beginner, the biggest hesitation about physical prints is often practical: “Where would I keep everything, and how would I send it?”
Our print-on-demand service removes those tasks. There is no minimum order quantity, no monthly minimum for fulfilment and no need to buy products before you make a sale. Creating a PrintShrimp account is free; you pay us per order.
Here’s how the responsibilities divide:
- You create: develop artwork you own or have permission to sell, and prepare suitable print files.
- You sell: build your listings, choose retail prices, market your shop and manage customer relationships.
- We fulfil: print the artwork, add the frame when ordered, pack the product and ship it to your buyer.
Orders are sent white-label, without PrintShrimp branding. Your artwork stays yours, and we use it only as needed to provide our service.
You still need to attract buyers and run your shop. But you can spend your working time on designs and sales rather than physical production.
Make your first listings easier with tools built for print sellers
Choosing physical prints doesn’t mean building every listing from a blank page. Our Listing Hub brings artwork uploads, listing text, mockups and product options together.
Our AI can write titles, descriptions and tags from your artwork, while room-scene mockups help show buyers how the design could look on a wall. You review and edit the listing before publishing.
Easy Mode templates include recommended prices for print-only and Black, White and Oak framed options. Recommendations are converted from GBP to your shop currency for you to review, giving you a starting point rather than leaving every size blank.
Check those recommendations against your selling costs, planned promotions and the current PrintShrimp fulfilment prices. Revenue is not the same as profit: marketplace fees, advertising and other business costs still matter.
The Listing Hub creates draft listings on Etsy for you to activate. For Shopify, it downloads a product CSV for you to import. AI listing generation has a free monthly allowance, with optional paid plans if you need more; those subscriptions are separate from fulfilment.
Can you sell physical prints and digital downloads together?
Yes, provided each listing makes the purchase unmistakable. A buyer should never have to guess whether they are ordering a file or a parcel.
You could offer a botanical illustration as a digital download for buyers arranging their own printing, and as a physical poster or framed print for buyers who want delivery of the finished piece.
Keep the distinction visible in your listing images and descriptions:
- Digital: state that the purchase contains files and no physical product.
- Physical: state that it is a printed product, with its available sizes and paper details.
- Framed: explain which frame options are available and that the artwork arrives ready to hang.
If you’re new, starting with one format can make learning simpler. Add another once you understand your products and can explain the difference confidently.
Start with a focused collection, then learn as you grow
You don’t need to upload an entire portfolio to begin. Choose a small collection with a recognisable theme, prepare files for the sizes you want to sell and build clear listings around them.
For physical products, check that each file matches the shape of its print size. A file prepared for one proportion won’t necessarily fit another without cropping. We also recommend ordering your chosen product to your own address so you can see the artwork on paper before promoting it.
Then focus on learning how to present and market your collection. The opportunity is not simply uploading an image—it’s creating an offer that makes sense to a particular buyer.
