Photographing a painting so the print matches

A scanner is best for anything up to A4: 300dpi, colour, and the file is ready. For bigger work, or anything with texture, photograph it: outdoors on an overcast day or indoors by a large window, never under a lamp, with the painting flat or upright and the phone square to it so the edges are parallel. Turn the flash off and step back so you're using the main lens rather than the wide one, which bends the edges.

Check the whites: if the paper looks grey in the photo, nudge the brightness or whites slider in your phone's editor until it matches the real thing. Don't push saturation; what you see in the preview is what prints, and matte paper gives the colours a slight calm that suits watercolour and gouache. Acrylics with strong colour can take satin.

Crop to the painting's edge, or leave a white border for a mounted look, and print at the original size or one up; a watercolour painted at A4 is lovely at A3.
