Printing a sunset without losing the colour

A phone screen is backlit and shows colours no ink can match, so the most saturated sunset will always be a shade calmer on paper. The aim is a print that looks like the evening, not like the screen, and three things get it there. First, use the original photo, not an edited copy with the saturation pushed up; the extra colour clips to flat orange when printed. Second, choose satin unframed, which keeps more of the glow than matte and avoids the mirror effect of gloss on a wall that gets light.

Third, look at the preview, which is the honest version: if the sky looks right there, it will on paper. If it looks flat, the photo was over-edited; go back to the original and try again.

Framed prints are matte behind plexiglass, which suits a sunset in a room with lamps; a Black frame makes the colour deeper, Oak makes it warmer. Landscape, A2 or A1, for a sky that goes across the whole picture.
