What to know about printing a pet photo

  • The best pet photos are at their eye level, outdoors or by a window, with the background simple. A phone portrait fits 8x10, 11x14 and 16x20 exactly; a normal phone photo fits A-series and 18x24 with a small crop.
  • Use the original from the camera roll; a copy from WhatsApp prints soft. Any original prints sharp to A2.
  • Satin suits fur unframed, because it keeps the detail without glare; framed prints are matte and look painterly, which suits a portrait.
  • Oak suits most dogs; White suits a pale cat on a pale background; Black suits a dark coat or a black-and-white photo. The preview shows all three.

Is this a photo print or a painted portrait?

A print of your photo, exactly as it is. If you want it as a painting, run it through an art filter or a commissioned artist first, then print the result here.

What size for a pet portrait?

A3 or 11x14 for a shelf or a hallway; A2 or 16x20 for a wall. Bigger than that and a phone photo of a moving dog starts to show its limits; the preview tells you.

Can I send it as a gift to the owner?

Yes. Their address at checkout, yours as the buyer, a message in the basket on a slip in the box, and nothing in the parcel shows the price.

Can I print a pet that's passed away from an old photo?

Yes. An old digital photo prints well at A4 or 8x10 even if it's small; a printed photo can be photographed flat in daylight or scanned, and prints at the same size it was.

Taking a pet photo that prints well

Get down to their level, so the camera is at their eyes rather than looking down on them; it's the single thing that separates a snapshot from a portrait. Shoot in daylight, outdoors or by a window, with the sun behind you, and keep the background plain: grass, a wall, a sofa. Burst mode and pick the one where the ears are up.

Crop tight. A dog filling the frame prints better than a dog in the middle of a garden, and the crop tool shows you the fit for the size you've picked. Portrait mode on a phone, with the blurred background, suits pets as well as people.
